Common oven & range problems

Oven, range and cooktop symptoms we fix — and what usually causes them

Not sure what's wrong? Here's what each symptom usually means, straight from the bench.

Why is my oven not heating at all?

An oven that won't heat usually comes down to a burned-out bake element on electric models or a weak igniter on gas models — the igniter is the single most common gas-oven failure. We test the element, igniter and safety valve before quoting, since these are usually straightforward same-day fixes.

Why is my oven baking unevenly or not reaching temperature?

Uneven baking or an oven that never hits the set temp usually points to a faulty temperature sensor, a worn element, or an oven that simply needs recalibration. We check the sensor reading against the actual cavity temperature so we fix the real cause, not just the symptom.

Why won't my gas burner light, or why does it keep clicking?

A surface burner that clicks but won't light — or clicks nonstop — is typically a dirty or wet igniter, a clogged burner port, or a worn spark module. Often it's a simple cleaning or a single-part fix rather than a whole new cooktop.

Why is my electric cooktop element not heating?

A radiant or coil element that stays cold usually comes down to a failed element, a burned-out infinite switch, or a loose connection at the terminal block. We test each in order so you're not paying to replace a part that's actually fine.

Why won't my oven door lock or run the self-clean cycle?

A door that won't lock or a self-clean cycle that won't start is usually a failed door-lock motor or control board. We also check the hinges and gasket, since a poor door seal is a common cause of heat loss and long preheat times.

Why is my oven burning food or running the wrong temperature?

If everything comes out overdone or undercooked, the temperature sensor or control board is usually reading wrong. It's typically a quick, inexpensive fix once we identify which control is off.

FAQ

Questions we hear a lot

How much does oven or range repair cost?

Oven, range and cooktop repair starts with a flat $110 diagnostic that's credited toward the repair. Most common repairs in Bergen County and nearby Rockland County run about $150 to $450 all-in, and you get the exact price upfront before any work begins.

Do you repair both gas and electric ovens and cooktops?

Yes — we repair gas and electric ovens, ranges, stoves and cooktops, including dual-fuel ranges and induction cooktops.

Are you a factory-authorized Z-Line repair service?

Yes — we're a factory-authorized Z-Line service center, so Z-Line range and cooktop repairs are done to manufacturer standard and keep your warranty intact. We're also factory-authorized for Speed Queen.

Is it safe to keep using a gas stove that won't light?

If you ever smell gas, shut it off at the valve, leave the area and call your gas utility first. For a burner that simply won't light with no gas smell, it's usually fine to stop using that one burner until we get out — most calls placed earlier in the day get a same-day visit. On our end we work on the appliance: the igniter, the range's own gas valve, the orifices and the connector. Anything in the building's gas piping goes to a licensed plumber.

How soon can you repair my oven or range?

Most oven and range calls placed earlier in the day get a same-day visit across Bergen County, NJ and Rockland County, NY. We're open seven days a week, 8am to 8pm.

Which oven and range brands do you repair?

We repair all major brands — including Wolf, GE, LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Bosch, KitchenAid, Frigidaire, Thermador and Viking — across gas, electric, dual-fuel and induction models, plus factory-authorized Z-Line service.
